Top 3 DoTERRA Oils for Alcohol Addiction

What makes an essential oil helpful for an addiction issue? Well, scent is the fastest way to our memory. When we smell something that reminds us of something, we automatically try and figure out where we smelled it before or what it reminds us of. For example, If I walk into a house that smells like chocolate chip cookies baking- I will automatically think of my mom baking when I was a kid. This was a happy memory, so now I feel happy and at home. In a moment of compulsion- we are anxious, overwhelmed, stressed out, in pain, angry, or sad.. and that's when we start thinking of finding relief with our drug of choice. The only reliable way we know, but now we're ready to make a change. We want to expand our coping skills, and learn how to be healthier. Essential oils are aromatic compounds that chemically affect our brain chemistry. Shifting our body from fight or flight response into rest and digest. Allowing our bodies to calm down. Then there's the magic of scent. We need something to shift our attention away from the compulsion. Some therapists recommend keeping a rubber band on your wrist, and snap it whenever a bad thought pops in your head. That's one tool used in cognitive therapy. I don't agree with this method, since It means punishing yourself for "feeling". Using pure, potent essential oils to calm your nervous system, then shift your attention to thinking about something else, takes us out of the immediate danger of acting on a compulsive behavior.

#1 DoTerra Oils For Alcohol Addiction:

Peppermint Oil: I've used peppermint essential oil with great success. My triggers were physical pain and anxiety. 1 drop of peppermint oil (doTERRA is the only one that I use since it's made for medicinal usage) raises my oxygen level back to 100%. I use one drop in my hands, cup my hands over my nose and mouth, take 4 deep breaths. I can breathe better, and my anxiety goes down. I also rub 1-2 drops on the back of my neck and it relieves the muscle tension. What a gift, seriously. Fast relief, and a new coping skill.

#2 DoTerra Oils for Alcohol Addiction:

Grapefruit Oil: Balances blood sugar and cuts cravings. You know when you're hungry and you've waited too long to eat. You feel angry, or lighted headed or indecisive... blood sugar imbalances make us choose unwisely. Like a handful of cookies because we couldn't wait for 10 more minutes for dinner. I use 1 drop of grapefruit in 8 oz of water to drink. It balances my sugar so I can think clearly, and not make an impulsive decision: like drinking alcohol. Grapefruit is also amazing for clearing the muck and toxins out of the liver.
